Small groups of four to eight people watch cards change, coins vanish and a signed card turn up somewhere it should not be, from a few steps away. Close-up, roving, walkabout or table magic
These names describe the same thing. Close-up is the style, with cards, coins, rings and borrowed objects. Roving, walkabout and strolling describe how the magician moves through the venue. Table magic is close-up magic at the dinner table. The magician may also mix in a little mind reading for a group.
When roving magic works best
Roving magic works while guests are standing and mingling. The best slot is the first 45 to 90 minutes of an event, during the cocktail reception, the welcome drinks or the networking hour. It breaks the ice, because people who do not know each other end up reacting to the same trick.
It does not work well once guests sit down to eat. A roving act at a seated dinner either gets skipped or feels forced, table by table. For a seated dinner, keep the roving set inside the reception, or book a short stage show for the dinner itself.
How long and how many guests
Roving magic is booked by the hour, usually 1 to 2 hours. One magician comfortably covers about 80 to 120 guests over 90 minutes by moving between groups. For more guests, two magicians work different parts of the room so nobody is left out.
