How to plan a magic show in Singapore

Most magic shows that go wrong were booked in the wrong format or the wrong slot. Here is what to decide and what to check with your venue before the day.

To plan a magic show in Singapore, decide the format first, then fit it into your programme and check the room. The format follows from your guests: children, a standing reception, a seated dinner or a big hall. Get that right and the rest is a short checklist.

Price: a kids birthday show usually costs SGD 250 to 650 and roving close-up magic SGD 600 to 1,200 for 1 to 2 hours. See magician prices in Singapore.

Step 1: choose the format

Your event Format that works
Kids birthday party A 30 to 60 minute kids show
Standing reception or networking hour Roving close-up magic
Seated dinner or dinner and dance A stage slot of 15 to 30 minutes, or a mentalist set
Gala, launch or public stage for 100 or more A stage illusion show
Wedding Roving magic at the cocktail reception, a short set at the banquet

Step 2: pick the slot

  • Roving magic: the first 45 to 90 minutes, while guests stand with drinks.
  • Stage slot: between courses, or just before the awards or speeches. Not during the noisiest part of dinner service.
  • Kids show: the middle of the party, before the food and the cake.
  • Leave a buffer after the magic, so a show that runs long does not push the next item back.

Step 3: check space and sound

Need Kids party Stage show or mentalist
Space About 2 by 2 metres clear Stage or about 3 by 3 metres of clear floor
Sound Not usually needed Wireless microphone, house or rented sound
Setup 10 to 15 minutes 30 to 60 minutes plus a sound check
Access Confirm with condo management or the venue Loading bay, agreed with the venue AV team

Roving magic needs none of this. The magician only needs guests to stand near.

Step 4: check the venue rules

  • Effects. Many hotel ballrooms and condo function rooms do not allow confetti or fire. Ask before the show is planned around them.
  • Parking. Condo function rooms and some restaurants have tight parking. Say so when you book, so the magician can plan travel time or arrange parking with the management office.
  • Sound check. Hotel ballrooms are often still being set up until the last hour. Book a sound check slot with the venue for any stage set.

Step 5: count your guests

One roving magician covers about 80 to 120 guests over 90 minutes. Above that, book two magicians who work different zones, or a stage act with a microphone. For a kids show, give the full age range of the children, not only the birthday child's age.

Step 6: book early enough

Book two to four weeks ahead for a normal date. For the June, November and December school holidays and Saturday afternoons, book four to six weeks ahead. For company dinners from October to December, book four to eight weeks ahead. Last-minute requests within 48 hours are sometimes possible, depending on who is free.

Step 7: confirm in writing

Before the date, confirm the effects, the timing, the running order and the contact person on the day in writing. Then send the details on WhatsApp or through the quote form.

Good to know

Questions people ask

What is the most common mistake when booking a magician?

Booking roving close-up magic for a seated dinner. Once guests sit down to eat, roving magic has no natural moment. Book a stage slot for the dinner, or keep the roving set inside the reception.

How much space does a magician need?

A kids show needs a clear spot of about 2 by 2 metres. A stage show or mentalist set needs a stage or about 3 by 3 metres of clear floor. Roving magic needs no space of its own.

Does the magician need a microphone?

Kids shows and roving magic usually do not. A corporate stage slot, an illusion show or a mentalist set needs a wireless microphone and the house or a rented sound system.

How long does setup take?

About 10 to 15 minutes for a kids show, and 30 to 60 minutes plus a sound check for a stage show.

How far ahead should I book a magician in Singapore?

Two to four weeks ahead for a normal date. Four to six weeks for the June, November and December school holidays, and four to eight weeks for company dinners from October to December.
